When Royal Caribbean conceived Project Genesis in the mid‑2000s, the goal was audacious: to build a pair of ships so large and so innovative that they would redefine the cruise industry. The first was Oasis of the Seas. The second — and ultimately slightly larger — would become MS Allure of the Seas.
Construction began in February 2008 at the Perno shipyard in Turku, Finland, shortly after the yard became part of STX Europe. Her keel was laid on 2 December 2008, marking the start of a massive engineering effort. Piece by piece, block by block, the ship grew into a floating city. When she was launched on 20 November 2009, she emerged as the largest passenger ship ever built, edging out her sister by a mere 50 millimeters — a quirk of construction that gave her the title.
Completed and delivered on 28 October 2010, Allure of the Seas was christened on 28 November 2010 by an unconventional godmother: Princess Fiona, the animated heroine from Shrek. It was a fitting choice for a ship that embraced entertainment and imagination as core elements of its identity. Her maiden voyage followed on 1 December 2010, departing from Port Everglades, Florida, which would become her long‑time home.
Like Oasis, Allure introduced the world to the neighborhood concept — seven distinct themed zones designed to make a ship of unprecedented size feel navigable and inviting. Guests could stroll through Central Park, an open‑air garden lined with restaurants; ride a carousel on the Boardwalk; or watch high‑diving performances at the AquaTheater. The Royal Promenade pulsed with shops, parades, and nightlife, while the Pool and Sports Zone offered FlowRider surf simulators, rock‑climbing walls, and a zip line soaring nine decks above the Boardwalk.
Her scale was staggering: 5,484 passengers at double occupancy, up to 6,780 at maximum, and a crew of more than 2,200. Yet she was designed to feel vibrant rather than overwhelming — a floating resort where every deck offered something new.
In 2014, Allure underwent one of the most unusual dry‑dock operations in cruise‑ship history. Dubbed Project Atlantis, engineers devised a way to fit the enormous vessel into a smaller dry dock in Grand Bahama by carefully ballasting and positioning her — all while completing upgrades and replacing a damaged Azipod gearbox. It became a legendary example of maritime problem‑solving.
Over the years, Allure has sailed both the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, shifting between Port Everglades and European homeports depending on the season. She has received multiple refits, including a major modernization scheduled for February–April 2025, ensuring she remains competitive in a fleet that continues to grow in size and sophistication.
Today, Allure of the Seas remains one of Royal Caribbean’s most beloved ships — a vessel that helped define the modern mega‑ship era. Though newer ships have surpassed her in size, her influence endures. She proved that a cruise ship could be not just a mode of travel, but a destination in itself: a place of neighborhoods, gardens, theaters, thrills, and endless activity.
More than a decade after her debut, Allure continues to sail as a testament to the ambition and imagination that reshaped the world of cruising.
