In 2007, on the shores of Lake Como, Italian powerboat legend Eugenio Molinari set out to do something no one had attempted before: merge the soul of a Ferrari road car with the body of a racing boat. Molinari had spent a lifetime chasing speed on water, but this project was different — a personal tribute to Ferrari’s 60th anniversary, and a celebration of the engineering passion that defined both him and the Prancing Horse.
The result was the Freccia Rossa — the Red Arrow — a sleek, aggressive, purpose‑built missile designed for the flying kilometre, one of the purest forms of water speed competition. It wasn’t a marketing exercise or a showpiece. It was a record‑breaking machine, engineered to prove that Ferrari’s performance DNA could thrive far beyond asphalt.
At the center of the Freccia Rossa was the Tipo F136E V8 from the Ferrari F430, a 4.3‑liter, 490‑horsepower masterpiece normally found screaming at 8,500 rpm on mountain roads and racetracks. Molinari adapted it for marine use — reworking cooling systems, lubrication, and drivetrain geometry — but left its character intact. It still barked, snarled, and climbed through the revs with the unmistakable urgency of a Ferrari.
The hull, shaped for minimal drag and maximum lift, echoed the aerodynamic philosophy of the F430 road car. Every surface was tuned for stability at high speed. Ballast could be added or removed to meet class requirements — a racer’s trick Molinari had mastered over decades.
This wasn’t just a boat with a Ferrari engine. It was a Ferrari‑inspired racing machine, built with the same obsession for balance, precision, and speed.
Molinari entered the Freccia Rossa in two weight classes for the flying kilometre:
-
1,100 kg class: 123.3 km/h (76.6 mph) average
-
1,450 kg class (with ballast): 122 km/h (75.8 mph) average
The difference was negligible — proof of the hull’s efficiency and the V8’s relentless power delivery. The Freccia Rossa didn’t just meet expectations; it exceeded them, setting new benchmarks and demonstrating that Ferrari’s engineering could dominate even on water.
For Molinari, the project was deeply emotional. It honored Enzo Ferrari, whose relentless pursuit of speed inspired generations, Ferrari’s 60th anniversary, marking six decades of innovation, His own lifelong connection to racing, both on land and water.
The Freccia Rossa became a symbol of cross‑disciplinary passion — a reminder that speed is a universal language, whether spoken through tires or propellers.
Today, the Freccia Rossa stands as a unique artifact in Ferrari history — not a factory project, but a Ferrari‑blessed creation that carries the marque’s spirit into an entirely different medium. It proved that the F430’s V8 was more than a road engine; it was a versatile, high‑revving powerhouse capable of rewriting records on water.
More importantly, it showcased Molinari’s genius: a racer, engineer, and dreamer who built a machine that bridged two worlds.
The Freccia Rossa remains one of the most fascinating footnotes in modern motorsport — a Prancing Seahorse, born from passion, precision, and the pursuit of speed.
