By the time the Mangusta 105 emerged from the shipyards of Viareggio, Mangusta Yachts had already carved out a reputation for doing things differently. Founded in 1985 by Giuseppe Balducci, the company had entered the market with a bold challenge to the dominant Cobra brand. The name “Mangusta” — Italian for mongoose — was chosen deliberately: the animal known for defeating the cobra. It was a declaration of intent, and the yachts that followed lived up to it.
Throughout the 1990s, Mangusta pioneered the concept of the maxi‑open yacht — long, sleek, powerful vessels that combined the thrill of offshore performance with the indulgence of luxury cruising. The Mangusta 80 became the breakthrough model, proving that large open yachts could be fast, stylish, and spacious. The Mangusta 105 was the next evolution of that philosophy.
Introduced as a flagship of the Maxi Open line, the 105 was a statement of speed and elegance. Designed by Stefano Righini, she stretched 31.4 meters in length, her low, aerodynamic profile giving her the unmistakable Mangusta silhouette. Beneath that sculpted exterior, she carried the heart of a racer: twin MTU 16V 2000 M93 engines, each producing 2,400 horsepower. With waterjets and even an optional gas turbine on early versions, she could surge to 30–33 knots, cruising effortlessly at 28. Her 1.3‑meter shallow draft made her uniquely capable of slipping into coves and anchorages that deeper yachts could only admire from afar.
Inside, the 105 offered a different kind of performance — one defined by Italian craftsmanship and comfort. Mangusta’s in‑house design team created interiors that felt both luxurious and relaxed, with open‑plan saloons, warm woods, and flowing lines. Below deck, she accommodated 10 guests in four suites, including a full‑beam master, two doubles, and a twin with Pullman. A crew of four ensured seamless service, whether the yacht was hosting a lively party or a quiet family escape.
On deck, the Mangusta 105 came alive. Her expansive sunpads, alfresco dining areas, and retractable sunroof made her a natural entertainer. She was built for Mediterranean summers — for champagne afternoons in Portofino, high‑speed runs along the Côte d’Azur, and sunset anchorages where the sea turned to glass.
The 105 became one of Mangusta’s defining models. She bridged the gap between the early maxi‑open yachts and the larger, more advanced vessels that would follow, such as the Mangusta 165 and the GranSport series. Her combination of shallow draft, high speed, and generous volume set a benchmark for the segment and influenced a generation of performance yachts.
Today, the Mangusta 105 remains a symbol of the brand’s golden era — a yacht that captured the essence of Italian style and engineering at the turn of the millennium. She is remembered not just as a vessel, but as a milestone: the moment when Mangusta proved that a yacht could be fast, spacious, luxurious, and unmistakably beautiful, all at once.
