When Harmony of the Seas took shape inside the vast construction halls of Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint‑Nazaire, France, she represented Royal Caribbean’s boldest step yet in the evolution of the Oasis‑class. Ordered in December 2012, she was envisioned as a refinement of the world’s largest cruise ships — bigger, more efficient, and packed with new experiences that would push the boundaries of what a modern cruise vessel could be.
Her keel was laid on 9 May 2014, and over the next 32 months, thousands of shipbuilders assembled her immense steel structure. She floated out on 19 June 2015, completed sea trials in March 2016, and was officially delivered on 12 May 2016. Three days later, she departed Saint‑Nazaire for the first time, watched by an estimated 70,000 spectators — a testament to the fascination these mega‑ships inspire.
Harmony’s maiden voyage began on 29 May 2016, sailing from Southampton to Barcelona, where she would spend her first summer season. Before entering full service, she offered two short preview cruises to Cherbourg and Rotterdam, giving early guests a glimpse of the innovations that set her apart. Her official christening took place on 10 November 2016, with educator Brittany Affolter serving as godmother.
At 226,963 gross tons, Harmony of the Seas became the largest cruise ship in the world at her launch, surpassing her sisters Oasis and Allure. But size alone wasn’t her story — it was what she did with it. Harmony introduced several firsts for Royal Caribbean, including the Ultimate Abyss, a dramatic 10‑story dry slide spiraling from Deck 16 to Deck 6, and the Perfect Storm trio of water slides, the first ever installed on a Royal Caribbean ship. The Bionic Bar, staffed by robotic bartenders, added a futuristic twist to the Royal Promenade.
Like her Oasis‑class sisters, Harmony was designed around seven themed neighborhoods:
-
Central Park, an open‑air garden
-
Boardwalk, with its carousel and AquaTheater
-
Royal Promenade, the ship’s bustling heart
-
Entertainment Place, home to theaters and lounges
-
Vitality Spa & Fitness Center
-
Youth Zone for families
-
Pool and Sports Zone, featuring FlowRiders, zip line, and climbing walls
Her early years saw her sailing the Mediterranean from Barcelona before crossing the Atlantic to begin Caribbean service from Fort Lauderdale. Later, she would shift to Galveston, Texas, expanding her reach across Western Caribbean itineraries. A major refit is scheduled for April 2026, ensuring she remains competitive in a rapidly evolving fleet.
Today, Harmony of the Seas stands as one of Royal Caribbean’s most successful and recognizable ships — a floating resort offering more than 20 dining venues, Broadway‑style entertainment, and a blend of thrills and relaxation that appeals to families, couples, and adventure‑seekers alike. She embodies the philosophy behind the Oasis class: that a cruise ship can be a destination in itself, a vibrant city at sea where every deck offers something new.
