When Abeille Bourbon entered service in 2005, she was hailed as one of the most capable emergency towing vessels ever built — a steel guardian stationed at the edge of the Atlantic, ready to race into storms that would send most ships fleeing for shelter. Designed by Norwegian naval architect Sigmund Borgundvåg and built at Myklebust Verft in Gursken, she embodied the modern philosophy of maritime rescue: immense power, absolute reliability, and the ability to operate in seas where human error or mechanical failure can quickly become catastrophe.
Christened on 13 April 2005 by Bernadette Chirac, with Jacques de Chateauvieux as sponsor, she immediately became a symbol of France’s commitment to protecting its coasts and shipping lanes.
A Sentinel of the Iroise Sea
At 80 meters long, with a 200‑tonne bollard pull and nearly 16,000 kW of combined propulsion power, Abeille Bourbon was built for one purpose: to save ships in distress. Her home port of Brest places her at the gateway to the Iroise Sea — one of the most treacherous maritime regions in Europe, where storms sweep in from the North Atlantic and shipping traffic is dense.
Operated by Abeilles International (later acquired by Boluda Towage) and permanently on call to the Maritime Prefect of Brest, she can be activated at any moment, day or night. Her crew of twelve lives with the constant knowledge that the next alarm could send them into hurricane‑force winds, towering seas, and life‑or‑death situations.
Her sister ship, Abeille Liberté, stands watch further north — together forming the backbone of France’s emergency towing capability.
Rescues in the North Atlantic
Since entering service, Abeille Bourbon has been involved in some of the most dramatic maritime interventions of the 21st century:
-
2006 — Rokia Delmas: Prevented a major pollution disaster off Île de Ré.
-
2007 — MSC Napoli: Towed the crippled container ship to Lyme Bay in a high‑profile rescue watched across Europe.
-
2010 — YM Uranus: Assisted the damaged tanker in the English Channel.
-
2015 — Multiple rescues: Towed three merchant ships suffering propulsion failures and escorted four more through dangerous conditions.
-
2016 — Modern Express: Saved the listing car carrier from grounding on the French coast, a mission that drew international attention.
Each operation reinforced her reputation as a vessel that ventures where others cannot — a steel “bee” buzzing around giants, as her name suggests, guiding them away from disaster.
A New Name, Same Mission
In 2024, Abeilles International was acquired by Boluda Towage, one of the world’s largest tug operators. As part of the transition, Abeille Bourbon was renamed Abeille Bretagne in May 2025. The name changed, but her mission did not. She remains on permanent standby, engines warm, crew ready, eyes on the horizon.
A Modern Maritime Icon
With her powerful silhouette, deep‑blue hull, and unmistakable yellow superstructure, Abeille Bourbon has become a beloved figure in Brittany — a symbol of safety, courage, and the quiet heroism of maritime rescue crews. Locals watch for her departure from Brest with a mix of pride and apprehension, knowing she sails only when someone else is in danger.
She is more than a tug. She is a sentinel of the Atlantic — a vessel built for storms, for emergencies, and for the moments when human skill and engineering strength stand between disaster and salvation.
Abeille Bourbon — now Abeille Bretagne — remains one of the most capable rescue tugs afloat, a modern legend of the high seas.
