When the Bourbon Orca entered service in 2006, she represented a turning point in offshore vessel design — a bold leap into the future of deep‑sea engineering. Built by Ulstein Verft AS in Norway and conceived under the AX104 design platform, she was the first offshore vessel to carry the now‑iconic Ulstein X‑BOW®, an inverted bow form that challenged a century of conventional naval architecture.
Ordered in 2002 and delivered in June 2006, the Bourbon Orca stretched 83.6 meters in length with a broad 18.5‑meter beam, powered by four Wärtsilä diesel‑electric engines driving twin 5‑MW steerable thrusters. She was designed as an Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel, but her capabilities extended far beyond anchor work: subsea intervention, ROV operations, deepwater installation, cargo transport, and oil‑recovery missions all fell within her operational envelope.
The X‑BOW® was the star of the design — a forward‑leaning, wave‑piercing form that reduced pitching, improved fuel efficiency, and delivered a calmer, more stable ride in heavy seas. Model tests had predicted its advantages; Bourbon Orca proved them at full scale. Her first officer, Arnkjell Brandal, famously remarked that the vessel produced “less shaking, less vibration, less noise, and less splashing,” a testament to the bow’s transformative effect on crew comfort and safety.
Equally innovative was the Safe Anchor Handling System (SAHS), which reduced crew exposure during one of the most hazardous tasks in offshore work. Together, the X‑BOW®, SAHS, and diesel‑electric propulsion made Bourbon Orca a showcase of what the next generation of offshore vessels could be. The industry took notice — the design earned the Engineering Feat of the Year award in 2005, even before the ship touched water.
For years, Bourbon Orca operated in the demanding conditions of the North Sea, performing anchor handling and subsea tasks where weather, waves, and workload tested every aspect of a vessel’s design. She became a benchmark for offshore performance, influencing an entire lineage of X‑BOW® vessels that followed.
In 2023, after nearly two decades of offshore service, the vessel was converted into a survey and research platform and renamed Kommandor Orca. Today she continues to work at sea, supporting scientific and offshore missions — a second life that underscores the strength and adaptability of her original design.
The Bourbon Orca’s legacy is clear: she didn’t just introduce a new bow shape; she reshaped expectations for what an offshore vessel could be. Her influence echoes across fleets worldwide, marking her as one of the most significant offshore vessels of the 21st century.
