When Alfa Nero emerged from Oceanco’s Alblasserdam shipyard in 2007, she instantly redefined what a modern superyacht could be. At 82 meters, with a bold, sculptural profile by Nuvolari & Lenard and interiors by the legendary Alberto Pinto, she was not merely a yacht — she was a statement. Commissioned by Greek shipping magnate Theodore Angelopoulos, who had acquired Oceanco in 2002, Alfa Nero became the shipyard’s flagship achievement, the vessel that announced Oceanco’s arrival as a builder of 80‑meter‑plus custom megayachts.
Her construction began in 2004, with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure taking shape over 18 months. The most challenging element was her now‑iconic stern: a vast, open terrace built around a 12×38‑foot infinity pool that could transform — via a hydraulic system — into a helipad or dance floor. It was a feat of engineering so ambitious that it became a defining feature of the yacht and a benchmark for the industry.
Sea trials in the North Sea recorded a top speed of 17.5 knots, with a published maximum of 20–21 knots, powered by twin MTU 595 TE70 engines. When she debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2007, Alfa Nero was nominated for nearly every major superyacht award. Her pale, airy interiors, vast owner’s suite, and 4,000 square feet of living space set new standards for luxury at sea.
She was, in every sense, a modern classic — a yacht that blended power, elegance, and innovation with rare harmony.
From 2007 to 2022, Alfa Nero was widely reported to be owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Guryev, who used her extensively. In 2009, she was listed for sale at $190 million, though she remained in private hands. Her long, low profile and distinctive stern made her instantly recognizable in ports from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean.
She was a yacht built to be seen — and she was.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Alfa Nero became entangled in international sanctions. By 2023, she lay abandoned in Falmouth Harbour, Antigua, her ownership frozen and her future uncertain. The Antiguan government declared her a hazard and moved to auction the vessel.
In June 2023, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt won the auction with a bid of $67.6 million, but withdrew after disputes over legal title. The yacht remained in limbo, polished daily but unable to move, a symbol of the geopolitical tensions reshaping the world of ultra‑luxury assets.
As of 2024, she remained in Antigua — gleaming, crewed, but legally stranded.
Even amid controversy, Alfa Nero’s design remains one of the most admired in modern yachting:
-
82 m length, 14.2 m beam, 3.9 m draught
-
6,630‑nautical‑mile range
-
Accommodations for 12 guests and 26 crew
-
A master suite spanning the upper deck
-
Light, elegant interiors by Alberto Pinto
-
And, of course, the transforming infinity pool, still one of the most innovative features ever installed on a yacht
Her influence can be seen in nearly every large yacht built since 2007.
Alfa Nero’s story is a study in contrasts: a masterpiece of design caught in the crosscurrents of global politics. She is one of Oceanco’s most iconic creations, a yacht that pushed boundaries and inspired a generation of naval architects. Yet her later years have been marked by legal battles, sanctions, and uncertainty.
Still, she endures — a floating sculpture of steel and glass, admired by the industry and watched by the world.
A yacht born in an age of ambition, now navigating the storms of a very different era.
