Carnival Paradise’s story unfolds like a ship with a stubbornly unique soul. Launched in 1998 as the world’s first fully non‑smoking cruise ship, she sailed out of Helsinki with bold “NO SMOKING” signs emblazoned across her hull and the backing of health organizations who believed she could change cruise culture. For years her crew enforced the rules with unwavering resolve—confiscating lighters, levying fines, and even putting passengers ashore if they broke the code. But idealism proved expensive, and by late 2003 Carnival quietly ended the experiment. When Paradise finally reached Long Beach in 2004—after dodging a gauntlet of hurricanes—the iconic signs were painted over the same day. Since then, she has reinvented herself again and again: shifting homeports, taking on new Caribbean and Mexican itineraries, gaining fresh cabins and decks through major refits, and eventually adopting Carnival’s modern livery. Through every change, she has remained a survivor of her era—one of the last Fantasy‑class ships still sailing, carrying with her the memory of a bold, short‑lived dream to make cruising smoke‑free.
