Delivered in 2000 from the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy, MS Amsterdam was the fourth and final vessel of Holland America Line’s Rotterdam‑class — a family of elegant, mid‑sized ships known for their classic lines, warm interiors, and long‑range capability. At 237 meters in length and carrying 1,380 passengers with a crew of 647, Amsterdam embodied the company’s traditional approach to ocean travel: refined décor, intimate scale, and a focus on cultural enrichment rather than sheer size.
Launched on 4 January 2000 and entering service that October, Amsterdam quickly became one of Holland America’s co‑flagships. She was especially associated with the line’s Grand World Voyages, months‑long global itineraries that demanded both comfort and endurance. Her diesel‑electric propulsion system, paired with twin ABB Azipods, gave her excellent maneuverability and a service speed of up to 25 knots, making her well suited for ambitious, globe‑spanning routes.
Inside, Amsterdam was celebrated for her understated elegance — rich woods, maritime artwork, and a layout that balanced intimacy with spacious public rooms. For two decades she carried loyal Holland America guests across the world, earning a reputation for warm service and a sense of continuity with the company’s deep seafaring heritage.
In July 2020, during the industry‑wide fleet reductions brought on by the global shutdown, Amsterdam was sold by Carnival Corporation to Fred. Olsen & Co. She was renamed MS Bolette, joining Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines alongside her sister ship, the former MS Rotterdam (now MS Borealis). Under her new name, she continues to sail internationally, retaining the recognizable Rotterdam‑class profile and much of her original interior character.
Today, whether remembered as MS Amsterdam or sailing forward as MS Bolette, the ship stands as one of the most iconic vessels of Holland America’s modern era — a blend of traditional ocean‑liner charm and contemporary amenities, built for long voyages and cherished by guests who appreciated her balance of scale, comfort, and style.
