MS Kungsholm (1953)
In the hopeful years after World War II, the Swedish American Line set out to rebuild its fleet and reclaim its reputation as one of the world’s premier operators of elegant ocean liners and refined cruise ships. The result of that ambition was the MS Kungsholm, a graceful, twin‑funnel liner built at the De Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. Launched in 1952 and delivered in 1953, she embodied a new era of travel — one that blended the traditions of transatlantic service with the rising popularity of leisure cruising.
Her design came from Eric Christiansson, the longtime architect of SAL’s fleet, who gave her a clean, modern profile: a low, sweeping superstructure, rounded forward decks, and twin funnels — one functional, one a dummy — echoing the classic lines of her prewar predecessors. Painted in SAL’s iconic all‑white livery with yellow funnels and blue crowns, the new Kungsholm looked every bit the Scandinavian ambassador of elegance.
She sailed on her maiden voyage from Gothenburg to New York in November 1953, quickly becoming a favorite among transatlantic travelers. Summers were spent crossing the North Atlantic; winters were devoted to long, luxurious cruises. In 1955, she made history by completing SAL’s first around‑the‑world cruise, a voyage that cemented her reputation as a ship built not just for transportation, but for adventure.
Her success encouraged SAL to expand. A new running mate, the MS Gripsholm, joined her in 1957, and by the early 1960s the company was planning yet another new flagship. To make room, the original Kungsholm was sold to North German Lloyd in 1964, ending her Scandinavian chapter after twelve years of distinguished service.
