The Sanson was a wooden steamer tugboat built in 1915 specifically for ocean travel, designed to operate in rough weather over the high seas. A classic tugboat of the ages. A late 19th century to early 20th-century sea-going tug, the Sanson was designed to push trans-Atlantic giants into the safety of Atlantic harbors and assist large, troubled vessels at sea — essentially a “pusher” for trans-Atlantic giants. With propulsion comprised of a steam engine producing up to 2,000 horsepower, the Sanson could reach speeds up to 14 knots.
The Sanson’s era coincided with the peak of steam-powered maritime transport, when tugs were essential for moving massive cargo ships, especially in adverse weather or when navigating narrow channels. Her design and power made her suitable for trans-Atlantic service, where large vessels often required assistance in docking or maneuvering.
The Sanson tugboat was a powerful, purpose-built ocean tug from 1915, representing the engineering and maritime practices of its time, and now celebrated through high-quality wooden model reproductions.
