When AIDAvita entered service in 2002, she represented the next step in AIDA Cruises’ vision of casual, contemporary European cruising. Built at Aker MTW in Wismar, Germany, she was the second ship in AIDA’s early fleet — bright, youthful, and unmistakably modern, with the line’s signature hull art and a focus on wellness, open spaces, and relaxed onboard life. At 202.85 meters long and carrying 1,266 passengers, she was designed for intimate itineraries and a style of travel that blended resort comfort with seagoing adventure.
Laid down in November 2000 and launched a year later, AIDAvita cost $350 million, a significant investment for the growing AIDA brand. She was nearly identical to her sister ship AIDAaura, featuring:
-
A large Body & Soul spa
-
Multiple sports and fitness areas
-
A sun deck designed for outdoor living
-
Diesel‑electric propulsion giving her a service speed of 21 knots
Initially registered in London, she sailed under P&O Princess Cruises management before AIDA’s consolidation under Carnival Corporation shifted her registry to Genoa in 2004.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, she became a familiar sight in the Mediterranean, South America, and on Transatlantic routes, offering a blend of German hospitality and global itineraries.
In 2017, AIDAvita underwent a major refit at Lloyd Werft in Hamburg. Her interiors were refreshed, public spaces redesigned, and technical systems upgraded — a mid‑life renewal that kept her competitive in an increasingly modern cruise market.
But only a few years later, the world changed.
In 2020, as the COVID‑19 pandemic halted global cruising, AIDAvita found herself laid up in Bangkok, then repositioned to Europe and eventually to Hamburg. By 2021, she was laid up in Tallinn, Estonia, awaiting a decision on her future.
In June 2022, AIDA Cruises announced she would not return to service. After two decades with the company, the ship’s AIDA chapter had come to a quiet close.
Sold to Turkish buyers and renamed Avitak, she remained in Tallinn under the ownership of Beta Marine Ltd. of the Marshall Islands — a ship in limbo, awaiting her next identity.
Her future became clear in January 2024, when she was sold to the China Development Bank for lease to Blue Dream International Cruise of Shanghai. After refurbishment, she sailed to China in March 2024, beginning a new chapter in East Asian cruising.
Renamed Blue Dream Melody, she now sails under the Liberian flag, offering itineraries tailored to the Chinese cruise market — a transformation that mirrors the shifting geography of global cruising itself.
From her origins as a symbol of AIDA’s early expansion to her rebirth as Blue Dream Melody, the ship has shown remarkable resilience. She has survived corporate mergers, a global pandemic, multiple ownership changes, and long lay‑ups — yet continues to sail, refreshed and reimagined.
Her story reflects the broader evolution of the cruise industry:
-
From European resort cruising
-
To global fleet redeployments
-
To the rise of Asia as a major cruise market
Today, Blue Dream Melody carries with her the legacy of AIDAvita — the bright, youthful ship that helped define AIDA Cruises in the early 2000s. She remains a capable, well‑designed vessel, still offering the relaxed, wellness‑focused experience she was built for, now adapted to a new audience and a new region.
A ship that has changed names, owners, and oceans — but continues to sail on.
