Early Miracle, the Fantasy class marked a turning point for Carnival Cruise Lines, a fleet of eight sister ships born in Helsinki’s Hietalahti shipyard and introduced to the world beginning with Carnival Fantasy in 1990. Built with the clean, practical lines of a modern ocean liner—cabins tucked deep within the hull and only a scattering of suites above—they carried forward the design philosophy of Carnival’s earlier Holiday class while quietly signaling the next era of mass‑market cruising. Over time, the ships evolved with their passengers: in 2006 Carnival launched the sweeping “Evolutions of Fun” refurbishment program, a $250‑million effort that modernized every vessel by 2010. Yet even within this unified class, two ships—Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise—stood apart, fitted with Azipod azimuth thrusters that gave them a different kind of maneuvering grace. They would also become the last cruise ships ever built with lifeboats confined solely to the upper decks, a final nod to an earlier generation of shipbuilding before the industry’s design standards shifted for good.
