Carnival Spirit is a Spirit-class cruise ship. Like the majority of her sisters Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend, she is owned by Carnival Corporation and operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Built by Kværner Masa-Yards Shipyard in Helsinki, Finland, Carnival Spirit was built by Kværner Masa-Yards at its Helsinki New Shipyard in Helsinki, Finland, Carnival Spirit was launched on 7 July 2000 and completed on 11 April 2001. She was formally named by American politician Elizabeth Dole in Miami, Florida, on 27 April 2001.
Carnival Spirit previously operated Mexican Riviera cruises from San Diego and Los Angeles until the ship left San Diego in April 2012, after which Carnival ended operations there. During northern summers, the ship sailed week‑long northbound and southbound Alaska itineraries between Vancouver and Seattle, and in December 2011 she also sailed to Hawaii.
After completing her Alaska and Hawaii seasons, Carnival Spirit repositioned to Sydney via a transpacific voyage with stops in Tahiti and Fiji, arriving on 16 October 2012. This marked Carnival’s first permanent deployment of a ship outside North America. Prior to the move, she underwent a US$7 million dry dock to adapt the ship for the Australian market, including new power outlets and switching onboard currency to Australian dollars. Her first Sydney‑based cruise departed on 20 October 2012.
In 2016, Carnival announced plans to base the ship seasonally in Shanghai starting in 2018, but later reversed the decision due to strong demand in Australia. In 2018, Carnival planned to move Carnival Spirit to Brisbane in 2020, but the COVID‑19 shutdown prevented her debut there. She became the last cruise ship to depart Sydney before the Australian cruising pause in 2020.
In February 2022, Carnival redeployed the ship to Jacksonville, Florida, for Bahamas cruises beginning 7 March, marking her return to permanent North American service after a decade. She was then scheduled for Alaska sailings from Seattle and later Caribbean itineraries from Miami through 2023, followed by deployment to Mobile, Alabama beginning in October 2023 after another Alaska season.
