The story of COSCO Container Shipping begins in 1961, when the newly founded China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) emerged as a state‑owned enterprise tasked with rebuilding China’s maritime presence. In its early years, COSCO focused on dry bulk transport, carrying coal, grain, and raw materials across Asia and beyond. But as China opened to the world in the late 20th century, COSCO evolved with remarkable speed, expanding into liner services and eventually becoming one of the world’s largest container carriers.
By the 1990s, containerization had reshaped global trade, and COSCO moved decisively into the sector. In 1997, the company established COSCO Container Lines Co., Ltd. (COSCON) in Shanghai. This marked the formal birth of COSCO’s dedicated container‑shipping arm. Over the next two decades, COSCON built a vast global network:
-
400+ self‑operated vessels
-
2.17 million TEU of capacity
-
Service to 569 ports in 140+ countries
Its blue‑and‑white ships became a familiar sight on every major trade lane—from Asia–Europe to the transpacific and the Indian Ocean routes. COSCO’s rise mirrored China’s own economic ascent, carrying manufactured goods outward and raw materials inward, knitting China into the global supply chain.
A turning point came in 2016, when the Chinese State Council approved the merger of COSCO Group and China Shipping Group. The consolidation created COSCO SHIPPING Corporation Limited, one of the largest maritime conglomerates in the world. The merger unified COSCO Container Lines with China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL)—a company known for operating the CSCL Globe, the world’s largest container ship in 2014.
The new COSCO SHIPPING group integrated not only container shipping but also ports, logistics, finance, and shipbuilding. This “Shipping + Ports + Logistics” model gave COSCO a vertically integrated structure unmatched by most global carriers. It also positioned the company as a strategic pillar of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, linking maritime trade routes from Asia to Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
In the 2020s, COSCO Container Shipping entered a new phase defined by technology and sustainability. Key milestones included:
-
2021: Recognition by SASAC as a “Double Hundred Enterprise” and management benchmark.
-
2023–2024: Launch of the Hi ECO green‑shipping product and blockchain‑based GSBN green certificates.
-
2024: Orders for twelve methanol dual‑fuel 14,000‑TEU ships, signaling a shift toward low‑carbon propulsion.
-
2025: The world’s first synchronous retrofit of methanol dual‑fuel main and auxiliary engines on the COSCO Shipping Libra.
These initiatives reflect COSCO’s ambition to lead the industry’s transition toward cleaner, smarter shipping.
Today, COSCO Container Shipping operates within a fleet of 1,500+ vessels totaling more than 130 million DWT, supported by 58 global terminals and a vast logistics network. It is one of the world’s top container carriers, competing alongside Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, and Hapag‑Lloyd for leadership in global trade.
From its origins as a modest state‑owned bulk carrier to its current status as a global maritime powerhouse, COSCO Container Shipping embodies the transformation of China’s economy and the evolution of modern shipping. Its ships carry not just containers, but the momentum of a nation that has become central to the world’s commercial tides.
