When the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 DS debuted in 2007, it represented a turning point in modern cruising yacht design. Created by renowned naval architect Philippe Briand, with the raised‑deck styling of Garroni Designers, the 45 DS blended blue‑water capability with the light‑filled comfort of a deck‑saloon cruiser — a combination that quickly made it one of Jeanneau’s most admired mid‑size yachts.
Built in France by Jeanneau, the 45 DS was conceived as a true long‑distance cruiser: strong, seaworthy, and easy to handle. Its hull was molded in fiberglass (GRP) with a cast‑iron keel, offered in two versions — a deep‑draft fin keel for performance and a shoal‑draft option for sailors exploring shallower cruising grounds. A 9/10 fractional sloop rig, furling mainsail, and genoa made the boat manageable for short‑handed crews, while a 54‑hp Yanmar diesel provided reliable auxiliary power.
Below deck, the 45 DS distinguished itself with a bright, airy interior made possible by its raised deckhouse and wrap‑around windows. The layout typically accommodated six people, with a forward cabin featuring a double V‑berth, two aft cabins with double berths, and a spacious saloon with a U‑shaped settee. An L‑shaped galley, two heads, and generous water and fuel capacities made the yacht well suited for extended passages or charter service.
On deck, the design emphasized comfort and visibility. The elevated saloon allowed sailors to enjoy panoramic views from inside, while the cockpit offered the space and ergonomics expected of a modern cruising yacht. Jeanneau’s philosophy of blending performance with livability was evident throughout — a yacht capable of crossing oceans yet equally at home on a leisurely coastal cruise.
Though the Sun Odyssey 45 DS is no longer in production, it remains highly regarded among cruising sailors. Owners praise its stability, ease of handling, and the distinctive deck‑saloon layout that set it apart from more traditional designs. It shares its lineage with the broader Sun Odyssey family, known for reliable blue‑water performance and strong owner communities.
Today, the 45 DS stands as a hallmark of Jeanneau’s mid‑2000s innovation — a yacht that combined contemporary styling with offshore capability. Whether used for private cruising or charter fleets, it continues to be sought after for its comfort, versatility, and the thoughtful design that made it one of the most successful deck‑saloon cruisers of its era.
