When Mein Schiff 3 entered service in 2014, she marked a decisive turning point for TUI Cruises. Until then, the young German cruise line had relied on refurbished vessels inherited from other fleets. Mein Schiff 3 changed everything. She was the company’s first purpose‑built ship, a vessel designed from the keel up to embody TUI’s “feel‑good” philosophy — modern, spacious, environmentally conscious, and unmistakably tailored to the German‑speaking market.
Ordered in September 2011 from the STX Finland shipyard in Turku, the project arrived at a moment of deep uncertainty for the yard. Financial strain, lost contracts, and the threat of bankruptcy hung over the build. Yet the ship became a symbol of resilience: supported by Finnish government innovation aid, municipal investment, and STX’s own backing, construction moved forward. Laid down in December 2012, launched in November 2013, and delivered in May 2014, the ship emerged as a triumph of engineering under pressure.
At 99,526 gross tons and nearly 293 meters in length, Mein Schiff 3 introduced the Blue Motion class, a new generation of efficient, environmentally optimized cruise ships. Her diesel‑electric propulsion system, powered by Wärtsilä 46‑series engines, was designed to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. Inside, she offered 1,253 staterooms, most with balconies, and accommodations for roughly 2,500 guests supported by a crew of about 1,000. Her wide beam and clean, modern interior layout reflected a design philosophy centered on comfort, open spaces, and a relaxed onboard atmosphere.
From her maiden voyage in June 2014, Mein Schiff 3 became a familiar presence across the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, and Northern Europe. As the lead ship of her class, she set the template for her sisters — Mein Schiff 4, 5, and 6 — and later influenced the design of the new Mein Schiff 1 and 2. Her first decade at sea passed without major incident, a testament to both her engineering and TUI’s operational discipline.
Today, Mein Schiff 3 stands as a milestone in TUI Cruises’ evolution — the vessel that transformed the brand from a newcomer into a major player in the European cruise market. She represents the moment when the fleet shifted from second‑hand conversions to purpose‑built, environmentally forward ships, establishing a design lineage that continues to shape TUI’s identity at sea.
