Launched in 2006 from the Hyundai Heavy Industries yard in Ulsan, South Korea, the vessel now known as MSC BILBAO began her career under the name Hammonia Bremen, sailing for the Hamburg‑based Hammonia Reederei. At 334 meters in length and nearly 90,000 gross tons, she was built during the early wave of post‑Panamax container ships — large, efficient, and designed to move high‑volume cargo across the world’s major trade lanes.
Powered by a MAN‑B&W 12K98MC‑CX main engine producing 68,640 kW, the ship was engineered for long‑haul reliability, carrying more than 100,000 DWT of containers at service speeds typical of mid‑2000s global liners. Her broad 43‑meter beam and deep hull form reflect the design priorities of the era: maximize capacity while maintaining fuel efficiency and stability on transoceanic routes.
In 2013, the vessel entered a new chapter when she was rebranded MSC BILBAO, joining the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s expanding fleet. The renaming aligned her with MSC’s global network, and she continued to operate under the management of Hammonia Reederei while sailing under the Portuguese flag. The ship retained the MSC BILBAO name through subsequent registry updates, reflecting her stable role within the company’s operations.
Throughout her service life, MSC BILBAO has been a familiar presence on international container routes, with AIS records showing regular movements through the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and other major global corridors. Her recent positions place her near Malta, continuing the steady rhythm of port calls and cargo exchanges that define modern container shipping.
Now more than a decade and a half into her career, MSC BILBAO remains fully active, a testament to the durability of Hyundai’s construction and the long service life typical of large container vessels built in the 2000s. She stands as a representative of the generation of ships that bridged the gap between early post‑Panamax designs and today’s ultra‑large container vessels — reliable, capable, and still essential to the flow of global trade.
