Delivered in June 2015 and built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea, MSC Zoe was the third vessel in MSC’s Olympic‑class series — a family of ultra‑large container ships that briefly defined the upper limits of global shipping capacity. At 395.4 meters long and 59 meters wide, she was among the largest container ships in the world at the time of her launch, capable of carrying 19,224 TEU, including thousands of refrigerated containers for perishable cargo.
Her construction followed the same monumental blueprint as her sisters MSC Oscar and MSC Oliver. A MAN B&W 11S90ME‑C main engine delivering 62.5 MW drives the ship at speeds approaching 23 knots, moving staggering volumes of cargo across the world’s busiest trade corridors. Despite her immense scale, MSC Zoe sails with a relatively small crew, supported by the automation and engineering sophistication typical of modern ultra‑large container vessels.
MSC Zoe’s name carries personal significance within the Aponte family. She was named for the young granddaughter of MSC founder Gianluigi Aponte, continuing the company’s tradition of naming its flagship vessels after family members. Upon delivery, she entered service under the Panamanian flag, operated by MSC in Geneva with technical management from MSC’s Italian division.
Her career has been defined by high‑volume Asia–Europe service — but also by a major maritime incident. On 1 January 2019, while sailing from Antwerp to Hamburg during storm “Zeetje,” MSC Zoe lost 342 containers north of the Dutch island of Ameland, with additional losses near Borkum. Debris washed ashore across the UNESCO‑protected Wadden Sea, prompting a large‑scale cleanup effort. A joint investigation by Dutch, German, and Panamanian authorities concluded that the ship’s loading and securing met existing regulations but recommended revising international rules for ultra‑large container ships operating in shallow, storm‑prone waters.
Despite the incident, MSC Zoe has remained fully active in global service since 2015, continuing to operate on major trade routes and calling at ports worldwide. She stands as both a symbol of MSC’s rapid expansion into the era of ultra‑large container ships and a case study in the evolving safety standards required for vessels of her scale.
Today, MSC Zoe remains one of the most recognizable ships in MSC’s fleet — a vessel whose size, capabilities, and operational history reflect the challenges and ambitions of modern container shipping.
