When MSC Oscar was delivered in late 2014 and christened in Hamburg on 8 January 2015, she instantly became a symbol of the new age of global shipping. Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea, she was the first of MSC’s Olympic‑class giants — and at 19,224 TEU, she briefly held the title of the largest container ship in the world, surpassing the CSCL Globe by 224 TEU.
Stretching 395.4 meters from bow to stern and spanning 59 meters across the beam, MSC Oscar was engineered for the high‑volume Asia–Europe trade lanes that demand both scale and efficiency. Her MAN B&W 11S90ME‑C main engine, producing 62.5 MW, drives the ship at nearly 23 knots, moving thousands of containers — including up to 1,800 refrigerated units — across oceans with remarkable fuel economy for her size. Despite her vast dimensions, she sails with a crew of just 35, a testament to the automation and design sophistication of modern ultra‑large container vessels.
MSC Oscar’s name carries personal significance within the Mediterranean Shipping Company. She was named for Oscar Aponte, son of MSC president and CEO Diego Aponte, continuing the company’s tradition of honoring family members with its flagship vessels. As the lead ship of the Olympic class, she set the tone for her sisters — MSC Zoe, MSC Oliver, MSC Maya, and MSC Sveva — all built to the same monumental scale.
Her maiden voyage began in March 2015 on the Asia–Europe rotation, and she quickly became one of the most recognizable ships in MSC’s fleet. Her size and engineering drew media attention as well, earning her features in the 2017 Mighty Ships documentary and a 2018 appearance on Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year.
More than a decade after her launch, MSC Oscar remains in active service, calling at major ports such as Singapore and Ashdod and continuing to move staggering volumes of cargo across the world’s busiest trade corridors. She stands as a defining example of MSC’s strategy: build bigger, move more, and operate with the efficiency required by modern global logistics.
Today, MSC Oscar is remembered not only for her brief reign as the world’s largest container ship but also for her role in shaping the era of ultra‑large container vessels — ships that have transformed the scale and rhythm of global commerce.
