Launched in 1991 from the Shin Kurushima shipyard in Tokyo, the vessel now known as Red Dragon began life as a compact but capable LPG carrier built for the growing global trade in liquefied petroleum gas. At 132 meters in length and just over 6,300 gross tons, she was engineered for efficiency, reliability, and steady service on regional and international gas routes.
Her propulsion came from a Mitsubishi 6UEC37LA engine producing 2,348 kW — a workhorse powerplant well suited to the demands of coastal and mid‑range LPG transport. With a deadweight of 5,140 DWT, the ship was designed to carry liquefied gases in insulated, pressure‑controlled tanks, maintaining cargo at cryogenic temperatures and ensuring safe delivery to terminals across Asia and beyond.
Over the decades, the vessel passed through a series of identities that reflect the shifting landscape of gas‑tanker ownership. She first appeared in registries as Red DP, later sailing under names such as G.Venture, Gaz Venture, Wetherby, and Gas Chios. Each renaming marked a new chapter — new operators, new routes, and new commercial roles — but the ship’s core purpose remained unchanged: moving vital energy cargoes across the world’s shipping lanes.
Her most recent transformation came under Vietnamese ownership, when she was renamed Red Dragon and registered under the Panama flag. Today she operates under Dinh Giang Shipping and is managed by Nhat Viet Transportation, continuing her long service life in the LPG trade. Despite her age, she remains active — a testament to the durability of Japanese shipbuilding and the enduring demand for mid‑sized gas carriers.
More than three decades after her launch, the Red Dragon stands as a representative of a generation of practical, hardworking LPG tankers. She may not be a headline‑maker, but her steady presence in the energy supply chain underscores the quiet importance of vessels that keep global commerce moving, one refrigerated cargo at a time.
