The Stancraft Mini Missile is one of the most striking expressions of Stancraft’s long tradition of handcrafted wooden speedboats—a vessel that blends classic mahogany artistry with modern, high‑performance engineering. Its lineage reaches back to 1933, when W.H. “Billy” Young and his son Stanley Young built their first wooden speedster on Flathead Lake, Montana. From those early days, Stancraft became known for sculpted hulls, meticulous craftsmanship, and a willingness to push the boundaries of wooden‑boat performance.
The Mini Missile carries that heritage into a new era. At 30 feet, it is a compact powerhouse, designed to deliver both speed and spectacle. Its hull is built using traditional plank‑on‑frame construction, shaped from rich hardwoods and finished with the deep, mirror‑like sheen that has become a Stancraft hallmark. Beneath its classic lines lies a thoroughly modern heart: a single Ilmor MV10 Viper engine, producing 550 horsepower and capable of driving the boat to 65 mph. With seating for up to seven passengers and a weight of roughly 5,000 pounds, the Mini Missile combines stability, acceleration, and elegance in a way few wooden boats can match.
The design reflects Stancraft’s signature blend of artistry and engineering. The Mini Missile’s long, low profile and sculpted topsides evoke the company’s earlier speedsters, while its hydrodynamic hull ensures smooth handling at high speeds. Every detail—from brass‑chromed fittings to leather‑lined seating—reinforces the boat’s identity as a handcrafted luxury vessel. Even the model versions, often displayed as collector pieces, are built with the same attention to detail: Honduran mahogany planking, dual cockpits, authentic hardware, and carefully painted finishes that mirror the real boat’s color schemes.
Culturally, the Mini Missile has become a symbol of Stancraft’s modern revival. As the company expanded under the leadership of Syd Young and later Amy and Robb Bloem, Stancraft embraced contemporary performance technologies while preserving the artistry of wooden boatbuilding. The Mini Missile embodies that balance—part classic runabout, part high‑speed showpiece, and entirely rooted in the craftsmanship that has defined Stancraft for more than ninety years.
Today, the Mini Missile is prized by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate both its rarity and its performance pedigree. Whether cutting across open water or displayed as a handcrafted model, it stands as a testament to Stancraft’s enduring commitment to building boats that are not only fast, but beautiful—vessels that celebrate the past while embracing the possibilities of modern engineering.
